If you're an Android user and you're at least running an OS newer than 1.6, you've probably gotten the new Gmail update by now. It's new, it's edgy, it has your contacts images right there on the main page.
Per the image above, Gmail has become pretty chic. Honestly, the first thought I had was, "is Google trying to copy Apple...?". I realize it's not the same, but it's strikingly similar. How many different ways can you have a contact photo on the email you just received.
Well, it is different and Google did do something pretty nifty via the threaded email that they have always offered. For each additional participant beyond the first, the contact image is broken up into halves, and then quarters. Not all your contacts may have images, and if not they the image will merely be a pastel square with the first letter of their name, large and in the center. The image reminds me of something Andy Warhol might have done if he had worked for Google (I would not be surprised to see him there today, if he were still around).
It has become apparent that not everyone is thrilled by this new change to the look of Gmail on the Android app. But if you remove the feature, you also lose the ease of selecting multiple emails. I admittedly jumped on the bandwagon for Gmail the same year it became available and I immediately appreciated threaded email. However, certain of my friends were not happy with this different method and balked at the face that they were initially unable to change it. Fortunately Google understands that you may not like the new and has offered a way back.
To get back to the old style, you'll want to visit the "Settings" menu and under "General Settings". The check box labeled "Sender Image" will control the feature.
If you do let go of this new feature, you can still gain access to the ability to select emails, it will just be less obvious. A press and hold of the desired email will offer selection to your heart's desire, along with all the other features of selection (like trashing, archiving, or folder swaps).
I, for one, truly appreciate the new look and await the next jump to awesome from Google.
