Google Drive replaces Handy Scanner

About 10 months ago I purchased Handy Scanner (HS) for Android for $4 on the Google Play Store.  Since that time I have recorded nearly ever scrap of documentation that has come through my inbox using it.  With the introduction of the Scan feature in Google Drive, it's all starting to change.

All I ever did was create a documents with Handy Scanner upload to Google Drive.  Now that Google Drive has the primary function of Handy Scanner incorporated, I wonder how the creators of Handy Scanner are going to distinguish themselves.

So far Handy Scanner differs from Google Drive Scan in that when adjusting an image the quality can be set manually.  Google automatically sets the quality of your document, leaving no options.  Handy Scanner also offers the ability to crop in-line or rotate when creating a document, Google Drive Scan does not have either of these features.

But for all the extras that Handy Scanner offers, it may just be the simplicity of Google Drive Scan that wins out.  However, I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't use Google Drive or would rather not have their documents automatically backed-up there.

I will have to evaluate the full scope, before I call a winner.

Smoothing Out Google Drive

Recently, Google updated the Google Drive app for Android, making the whole experience even less complicated. The card-style interface that is available on the desktop version of Google Drive is now available on Android as well.  The intent here is to give the user a more visual ideal of the content of the file.  

The newest feature in this update brings the capacity to create a scan of a document by using the camera of the Android device (Not available on the Nexus 7).  Drive has the ability to recognize characters and will allow you to search for scanned documents and through them as well.  Another feature that was not previously available in Drive for Android is the file tree.  Although it was possible to drill down into the tree, there was no way to backtrack through it.  Now across the top of the screen in Drive the tree can be seen.  

As it is with Google products updates and coming fast and making our lives easier.  What's not to love?
